Abstract
Adolescent females are at a high risk for various psychosocial issues such as low self-esteem, low self-efficacy, poor body image and more (Chard, et al., 2019 as cited in Campbell & Hausenblas, 2009; Robbins et al., 2004; Schmalz et al., 2007).
Studies have also shown that participating in physical activity and exercise can increase self-esteem and social-emotional skills (Chard et al., 2019 as cited in Sallis, Prochaska, & Taylor, 2000).
Social participation and physical activity are defined as occupations in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework 4th Edition (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2020).
Aim: To determine how occupational therapists can use their knowledge and skills to help young females increase self-esteem and self-efficacy using empowerment exercise groups like Girls Empowerment.
Purpose: To take the existing Girls Empowerment program, revamp it to embed OT principles into it and pilot the new protocols at other OT clinics.
