Abstract
The goal of this project was to create a wedding cake for a bride that reimagines the extravagant luxury of the 1920s through a more modern lens. Inspired by the Art Deco movement the design utilizes the iconic color palette of white, gold, and black to add geometric and bold color contrast on the fondant tires. Each tire has a unique pattern to showcase elements from the design board such the wedding dress to the invitations that ensure cohesion with the overall wedding theme. The design features many modern techniques such as brush embroidery on the top tier and gold luster dust used to paint fans and zigzag lines which are commonly found in 1920s art. The focal point of the cake design is the intricate gum paste florals that ascend the cake. These flowers introduce colors of deep greens, rich reds, and blush pink to soften the stark contrast of the background tiers and are inspired by florals in the bridal bouquet. The delicate floral arrangements help ground the cake's composition by introducing movement to guide the eye upward. This is further enhanced by the solid black fondant tier in the middle of the cake that serves as a dramatic backdrop to showcase the details and vibrancy of the florals. As a whole the cake design balances a juxtaposition of organic floral forms with precise geometric patterns, resulting in a sophisticated wedding cake that captures both vintage glamour of Art Deco and contemporary style.
