Abstract

This project examined the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and smartphone addiction among young adults. The objective was to explore whether exposure to early life adversity was related to patterns of problematic smartphone use. Researchers used data from the 2022 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey, a behavioral survey administered to adults aged 18–25 who resided in Rhode Island for at least part of the year. The study focused on identifying potential relationships between reported childhood experiences and current technology use behaviors. We believe that people who have experienced ACE’s before the age of 18 have a higher risk of developing problematic smartphone use because they are more likely to use their smartphones as a source of distraction.
