Abstract

This project examined childhood obesity among youth in Rhode Island and proposed a school- and community-based intervention to improve nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Guided by the ecological model and evidence-based public health frameworks, the program was developed with envisioned collaboration with Brown University Community Health, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, local schools, and community partners. The intervention aimed to increase nutrition knowledge, promote healthy eating behaviors, expand access to safe physical activity opportunities, and strengthen family engagement. Key components included culturally tailored nutrition workshops, after-school physical activity clubs, monthly family health nights, and the distribution of family toolkits with recipes and shopping resources. Program evaluation incorporated pre- and post-intervention surveys to assess changes in dietary behaviors and physical activity participation. A SWOT analysis was conducted to examine feasibility, identifying strengths such as strong community partnerships and evidence-based design, as well as challenges related to resources, sustainability, and long-term engagement. Overall, the project highlighted the importance of multi-level, collaborative approaches to addressing childhood obesity among Rhode Island youth.
