Abstract

Birthing professionals need more education about how acute postpartum OT and PT can produce successful recovery outcomes in their patients. OT's unique scope of practice includes therapeutic interventions that address mental, physical and emotional health challenges impacting occupational performance. They also have expertise in task analysis, environmental assessment, and providing modification recommendations that support an easier transition home after discharge. While both PT and OT tend to be absent in acute postpartum care, OT is particularly underutilized, allowing for many opportunities for research that would amplify the expansion of OT in maternal health. The Capstone research project was developed to measure the impact of online education on birthing professionals' perspective of acute postpartum rehab. The goal of this online education module is to increase birthing professionals' knowledge about postpartum therapy and the likelihood of consistent referral to OT after giving birth. The methods, results, and implications for occupational therapy will be discussed.
