Abstract
Las Vegas, Nevada otherwise known as Sin City started as a small rail road stop which evolved into gambling oasis in the Mojave high desert. The initial progression was to change a stop on a rail way into an incorporated city. Significant change occurred in the 1930’s which was built on the simple business plan of legalized gambling. Since that time Sin City has had to constantly adapt to fulfil the needs of the guests that visit while remaining profitable for the casino and resort owners. The research will show what changes in the business models have taken place over the decades and why those changes were necessary. Many people believe that the major changes to the city’s business model was related to the transition of ownership from the mob to corporate run organizations. Research suggests that, that is not the case; business survival (added competition) and changing trends related to guests are the primary factors in the ever-changing business models.
Today Las Vegas is experiencing low tourism numbers in terms of guest arrivals while achieving growth in visitor spending. The current situation is based on the shift in the business model that is currently being utilized by the casinos, resorts and entertainment groups. The focus has shifted from gambling to other forms of entertainment. Another major shift occurred in the food service industry which once catered to low-cost buffets, but now focuses more elaborate dining options which attracts customers seeking experience-based entertainment.
