Abstract
Throughout time, wine experts have learned how easily taste perception of wine can be altered by various factors, from a change in temperature to the utensil used to taste it. One underexamined factor that affects taste perception of wine is music. By determining music's effect on wine, sommeliers can learn how to use music to elevate taste profiles and take another step in the never-ending journey of wine exploration. This study essentially explores the effects of ethereal music on taste perception of wine. Using an experimental design, this study compares the reactions of guests tasting a series of wines without music and then tasting those wines again later with ethereal music playing in the background. This data was captured through video recording and analyzed by monitoring both verbal and nonverbal communication expressed by each guest. The videos were transcribed, capturing each participant’s thoughts on each wine sample, which were cross-referenced to demonstrate any variation between trials and between participants. By comparing the two reactions, conclusions were drawn to determine the extent to which ethereal music influences the taste of wine and under what circumstances those changes occur.
