Abstract

Pediatric feeding difficulties are common all across the world. In fact, 1 out of 4 children worldwide will have a feeding difficulty stemming from a behavioral tendency, sensory issue, autism diagnosis, or other condition that affects their ability to eat similarly to their typically developing peers. Feeding difficulties include aversions to food because of taste, texture, etc., swallowing disorders, oral motor difficulties, failure to thrive, inability to cue hunger or fullness, or challenging behaviors at mealtime. Primary caregivers who are not properly educated on their children’s feeding difficulties may experience increased difficulty caring for them in their natural settings. They may have difficulty due to a lack of training, skills, or understanding of exactly what their child is going through which can negatively impact the family system. Research shows that educational literature can be helpful to families struggling with how to address their child(ren)’s feeding difficulties. The purpose of this capstone project is to provide caregivers with educational literature to use in their home environments to help their children eat more effectively and increase participation in mealtimes.

Objectives:

The following are the main objectives of this capstone project:

1. Create educational resources focused on strategies for caregivers to use to address their child(ren)’s feeding difficulties

2. Attach educational resources to QR codes to increase the accessibility of resources for families

3. Evaluate if the use of educational resources is effective in helping the child(ren)’s feeding skills improve in their home environments
