Abstract
A SCI is a traumatic or non-traumatic event that damages the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal, resulting in changes in strength and sensation at and/or below the level of injury (Dirette et al., 2021). Current rehabilitation (rehab) practices focus more attention on the physical disability, meaning mental health is often overlooked. Depression, anxiety, negative body image, identity loss, and reduced quality of life (QOL) are most commonly seen in this population. Shortened length of stays reduces time to address these concerns (Chevalier et al., 2009). Use of virtual platforms within this population allowed for increased inclusivity, reduced inhibitions, and higher satisfaction rates (Tamplin et al., 2020).
Mission / Vision:
Improve QOL and self-confidence in adults with SCI by providing a peer-mentor co-led virtual wellness program addressing mental health topics through an occupation-based lens to help participants lead happier, more meaningful, and more independent lives.
To fill the gap in the rehabilitation industry by creating a sustainable virtual wellness program which advocates for and addresses client-specific topics/concerns associated with living with a SCI
