Abstract
Our Communication Assistance Technologies (CAT) device showcases a groundbreaking advancement in Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology. Specifically designed to assist individuals with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), social anxiety, selective mutism, and language learners, this device incorporates multiple touch-sensing panels and a small LCD screen to allow individuals to communicate quickly, discreetly, and efficiently. With the touch of a button, the user can display certain words or phrases on the screen, turning everyday wearable items like backpacks and belt bags into incredible communication devices.
The current iteration of our CAT devices focuses on modularity, ensuring that the hardware can be adapted for use with any type of bag, from belt bags to backpacks. This versatility is achieved through the use of detachable or extendable wiring systems and flexible clipping mechanisms that can securely attach to any bag strap, regardless of thickness. At the heart of the CAT device is also a compact, yet highly efficient microcontroller (the brain of the device) that manages multiple inputs and tasks, making the technology not only powerful but also user-friendly.
Apart from hardware, an online platform is being developed that will allow users and caregivers to customize the device's settings, providing a tailored experience that meets individual communication requirements.
