THE WOOD CARVER
True craftsmanship is shown in the wood carvings of Old Quebec. Practiced for many generations, wood carving is an art that comes naturally to the French Canadian habitant and practically every village boasts of its artisan. "Quaint" is a poor word to use when describing these products of a skillful people. The figures and statuary carved with such facility show a deep insight and an amazing knowledge of character, and examples of their art can be seen in the old churches of Quebec and in National and private collections. Wood carving is one of Quebec's justly famous handicrafts; it is a medium of expression for people who live quiet, secluded lives and who are not disturbed by the rush and confusion of our modern world.
